It is impossible to overstate the tension between Kylian Mbappe and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG).
Leonardo, the club’s former sports director, has now stated that Mbappe is not a leader and is not required to win the UEFA Champions League.
Leonardo worked with Mbappe for three seasons before he left PSG in May 2022.
The majority of the Mbappe transfer saga that the Brazilian executive experienced involved Real Madrid. One of the climaxes of such dramas happened in the month when Leonardo was fired.
The French superstar signed a contract deal with PSG when many believed he was going to sign with Real as a free agent.
The deal Mbappe signed includes an option to extend it in 2025. However, as Mbappe said in his letter to PSG earlier, he won’t trigger that option, which means he will become a free agent again after the 2023-24 season.
🎙️ Leonardo: “PSG existed before Kylian Mbappé and it will exist after him. He has been in Paris for six years and in those six seasons, five different clubs have won the Champions League.
This means that it is entirely possible to win this competition without him.

“For the good of PSG, I think the time has come for Mbappe to go, no matter what,” Leonardo said in an interview with L’Equipe.
“Paris-Saint-Germain existed before Kylian Mbappe and it will exist after him. He’s been in Paris for six years and, over those six seasons, five different clubs have won the Champions League. None of which had Mbappe in their ranks.
“That means it’s entirely possible to win this competition without him.”
