Foxes assistant praises stand-in keeper

Leicester City assistant manager Chris Davies says Danny Ward made the most of a rare opportunity to play against Burton on Tuesday. After battering Southampton 9-0 at St Mary’s on Friday evening, boss Brendan Rodgers unsurprisingly made several changes for the Carabao Cup game away at the League One outfit.
Nine were made in total, including a rare run-out for Welsh international keeper Ward, in place of Kasper Schmeichel.
It was a relatively comfortable evening for the Foxes, as goals from Kelechi Iheancho, Youri Tielemans, and James Maddison sent them through to the quarter-finals in a 3-1 win.
Liam Boyce’s goal in the second half made it 2-1 but Maddison’s strike ended the game as a contest with a few minutes remaining.
Despite failing to keep a clean sheet at the Pirelli Stadium, it was a good evening’s work for Ward, who was playing just his seventh match in Leicester colours after joining Liverpool at the beginning of last season from Liverpool.
With the score at 2-1, Ward tipped over a fiercely struck effort from Brewers’ midfielder Scott Fraser which was probably the stand out moment among many, according to Davies. “That was an excellent save – a real reaction save. It was a crucial save in the game and he came in and played well,” he said. “He’s good at decision making and has good quality on the ball, and that save was a big save. That’s what you need your goalkeeper to do.”
It has been difficult for Ward to establish himself at the King Power Stadium such has been the excellent form of Danish international Schmeichel.
Leicester paid Liverpool £12.5million to bring the 26-year-old to the East Midlands but he has yet to make his Premier League debut.
The 26-year-old last played regular football in the 2016-17 season when he was on loan at Huddersfield in the Championship and helped guide them to promotion via a play off penalty shoot-out win over Reading.
