Frenkie de Jong Set For Barcelona Contract Adjustment In 2023

Frenkie de Jong is reportedly set to hold discussions with president Joan Laporta over a “salary adjustment” next summer.

Manchester United targeted the 25-year-old hard during the summer transfer window, following the appointment of ex-Ajax manager Erik ten Hag.

Man United were thought to have agreed a deal with Barcelona which would have fetched the Catalan giants up to €85m (£75.9m) including performance-related add-ons.

Despite Barcelona’s obvious willingness to conclude a sale and increase their coffers, De Jong stood firm and refused to leave the club that still owes him millions in deferred wages.

Man United were completely unsuccessful in their attempts to entice the midfielder away from Camp Nou, and he is now contracted to Barcelona until 2026.

De Jong’s deferred wages were a major reason in his choice to snub the Red Devils, with the midfielder signing an agreement with Josep Maria Bartomeu in 2020.

Frenkie de Jong To Discuss Contract Adjustment With Barcelona?

Barcelona allegedly threatened legal action over De Jong’s contract during the summer after discovering claimed proof of crime in negotiations.

While such an encounter did not result in anything, YouTube channel Que T’hi Jugues claims that Frenkie de Jong and Barcelona will meet next summer to discuss money.

Both the midfielder and Laporta are thought to be determined to reach an agreement, which might disrupt Man United’s chances of further offers.

Frenkie de Jong recently opened up about his summer transfer issue with the Red Devils, stating that he kept his cool throughout since he wanted to stay in Catalonia.

“I always wanted to stay at Barcelona and this is why I always remained calm in the summer,” De Jong said at a press conference after arriving for international duty with the Netherlands.

Man United agreed a deal with Real Madrid for Casemiro after conceding defeat in their pursuit of De Jong, but there is conjecture that the 20-time English champions may resume their interest in January.

The ex-Ajax midfielder has 14 goals and 18 assists in 148 appearances for the Catalan giants in all competitions since 2019, however he has only started four of his team’s eight games this season.
