Frustrated Wenger slams Arsenal finishing as Gunners drop off title pace

Arsene Wenger was frustrated with Arsenal’s “very bad” finishing as his side slipped further back in the Premier League title race following a 0-0 draw at home to Southampton on Tuesday.

Arsenal missed a number of chances against the Saints at Emirates Stadium, and have now failed to score in their last three league games to fall five points behind table-toppers Leicester City.

The Gunners’ stalemate with Southampton also saw North London rivals Tottenham edge ahead of them into third place on goal difference, and Wenger was left to rue missed opportunities as Mesut Ozil and Laurent Koscielny were
in particular guilty of spurning presentable chances.

“It is very frustrating, we produced quite a good performance, especially in the second half,” Wenger said. “We created 10 chances and came out with no goal.

“The performance we wanted was there but we can’t be happy with the way we finished our chances. That’s what is most disappointing; some players missed some chances that they usually take and our finishing is very bad at the
moment.

“We’ve played three games without scoring. We started slowly but Ozil had two great chances, we were a bit nervous because we lost our last game at home but in the second half it was one-way traffic.

“We didn’t make enough of our set pieces, we didn’t take them well, we didn’t finish well.”

With Leicester, Manchester City and Tottenham all victorious elsewhere on the night, Arsenal ended the night in fourth, five points ahead of Manchester United in fifth.
