Kevin Gameiro scored a brace as France kick-started their World Cup qualification campaign with a 4-1 victory at home to Bulgaria tonight.
The Atletico Madrid attacker was making just his tenth appearance for Les Bleus but was alert to equalise in the 23rd minute after Mihail Aleksandrov had given Bulgaria a surprise lead from the penalty spot.
Gameiro’s goal got France back into the game and soon after, Didier Deschamps’ side seized control, with West Ham United star Dimitri Payet finding the net and Antoine Griezmann also scoring to make it 3-1 before half-time.
France continued to dominate in the second period, with Gameiro doubling his tally to add further gloss to the scoreline.
This was a much-needed win for France, who drew 0-0 away to Belarus last month in their opening fixture.
Deschamps’ side will be seeking to take all three points when they face the Netherlands away on Monday in their next qualifier.
