Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold might play in midfield for England against Malta on Friday, as hinted by the Three Lions manager, Gareth Southgate.
Although Alexander-Arnold has frequently struggled for playing time at the international level, his remarkable end to the Premier League season, which saw him accumulate seven assists and a goal in his final 10 games, helped push his way into this summer’s squad.
Jurgen Klopp’s tactical change, which put the 24-year-old in a more inverted role and enabled him to advance in midfield, was crucial to Alexander-Arnold’s comeback, and Gareth Southgate was not blind to the outcomes.
A beaming Southgate said when asked if he might start Alexander-Arnold in the middle of the field against Malta: “Well, let’s see! You know that I think he is more than capable of playing there and it can be really exciting.
