Gary Lineker has torn into Sir Jim Ratcliffe, calling his rule at Manchester United “shambolic”.
The Red Devils’ season reached a new low over the weekend with a 3-2 defeat to Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford, which came just hours before the shocking departure of sports director Dan Ashworth, who had only been in the post for five months. It left United 13th in the Premier League league, just 10 points above the relegation zone, with issues both on and off the pitch.
Lineker, speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, painted a bleak picture of the club’s current situation and listed four significant mistakes Ratcliffe, 72, has made during his 10-month time as United’s owner. “Ratcliffe came in, and everyone thought everything was going to be fine, but it’s actually been more shambolic in many ways,” the ex-England striker, 64, explained.

“We saw the entire Erik ten Hag incident this summer when they were interviewing other managers. They ended up going back to Ten Hag and giving him a contract, and then they fired him a few months later, and he received a lot of money.
“They brought Dan Ashworth in, and he’s now out the door. They’ve raised the ticket prices, which has displeased many fans. They’ve made big changes at the football club, they’ve moved out the women’s football team. It’s been a shambles.”
Alan Shearer agreed, noting: “Not only are they poor on the pitch, what on earth is going on off the pitch? I mean, it’s embarrassing to go out and get a guy [Ashworth] and for him to be on gardening leave for six months, he spent longer on gardening leave than he did in his position at Man United.
