Gary Neville Offers Verdict On Gareth Southgate Becoming Next Man Utd Manager

Manchester United icon Gareth South  Gary Neville, gate might take over as head coach if Dan Ashworth decides to join Old Trafford. As pressure on Erik ten Hag grows, England manager Southgate has been heavily linked to the Red Devils job.

Ten Hag can still fall short of winning a title or qualifying for the Champions League this year. Numerous reports indicate that Sir Jim Ratcliffe will probably fire the Dutchman in that situation.

Southgate has been mentioned as Ten Hag’s possible replacement. The 52-year-old may play a significant role in England’s Euro 2024 campaign this summer, which Neville thinks could complicate the timing of a transfer to United.

The former United captain thinks that if things are handled “maturely,” with England appointing a replacement before the tournament, then things might work out. Later in the year, the new Three Lions manager would eventually start work.

Neville stated on the Stick To Football Podcast: “Psychologically, I never envisaged Gareth Southgate managing Manchester United. Now that Dan Ashworth has entered, I can see it. Just wondering what Erik ten Hag needs to do to continue managing Manchester United. For example, is the FA Cup sufficient? Should he aim for the top four or top five spots in the Champions League?

In His words?

“I think if Gareth is leaving, I think to be honest with you, you’ll have seen this in tournaments, but it’s never been easy. England will have qualifiers starting up again a couple of months after the tournament, so they’ll have to have a new manager in.

“And Gareth will need to sort his future out, to get a club for potentially the start of next season. So, I think if it’s done maturely, I can see how it would be brought forward in terms of Gareth. Forget Manchester United, England would need to appoint a new manager.

“So, they are going to have to appoint a new manager pre-tournament, probably. And say Gareth is going to be leaving after the tournament, unless he’s just going to leave on the last day and do it quietly, I don’t know.”
