Gary O’Neil Speaks Out After Wolves Star Alleged Racist Abuse During Pre-Season Friendly

Wolves manager Gary O’Neil said that Hwang Hee-chan declined the chance to walk off the pitch after the South Korean forward reported suspected racial abuse during a pre-season friendly against Como. Reported By Express News.

The second half of the training match was overshadowed by an incident that led to Daniel Podence getting sent off for punching one of his opponents, and Wolves stated that they would make a formal complaint to UEFA.

O’Neil revealed that he asked Hwang whether he wanted Wolves to abandon the match in protest of the racial abuse he alleged he had suffered, but the 28-year-old preferred to continue playing.

“Channy heard a racist remark which is really disappointing,” O’Neil said. “I spoke to Channy about it, checked whether he wanted to take the team off or come off himself, but he was keen the team carried on and got the work they needed.

“It’s extremely disappointing that it happened, that we have to talk about it, and that it had an impact on the game; it’s not ideal, and such things should not happen. He is obviously disappointed, and understandably so. I’m proud of him for wanting to keep going and prioritize his team during a difficult time for him.

“He knew it was a pre-season trip, and he wanted the guys to work and get their minutes, despite the fact that he’d experienced something extremely upsetting. Channy will be OK; he will have our full support, and we will pick him up in the morning to ensure he is fine.
