Pierre Gasly feels Renault’s form means it will be tough for his Toro Rosso team to catch them in the Constructors’ Championship this season. The 23-year-old began the campaign driving for Red Bull but was demoted to the junior set-up after the Hungarian Grand Prix. Things had not gone to plan over the first half of 2019, with a fourth-place finish at the British Grand Prix his best return. With an inferior car, the Frenchman was never going to pull up any trees with Toro Rosso but did manage a seventh-place finish in Japan. His team has taken 64 points to sit sixth in the table, while Renault are one place but nine points better off. There are three races to go and Gasly, while pleased with his progress, does not see his team bridging the gap. “I’m really happy with the way we work with the team, with the new engineers and the new car, and I’m happy with the way we perform every weekend,” he said. “We’re in a tight battle in the championship. It’s important to take every single point we can and the plan is to keep on going. “They (Renault) seem to be a bit more consistent than we are, but as long as it’s possible we need to keep on pushing.”
