Javier Tebas’ criticism of the Barcelona players’ alleged provocation of and subsequent response to the throwing of a bottle during their visit to the Mestalla on Saturday has been condemned by many, including former Blaugrana president Joan Gaspart.
The man who was in charge at the Camp Nou between 2000 and 2003 called on the LaLiga president to either apologise for his remarks or to step down from his position.
“As a fan and as a Cule, I hope that the LaLiga president apologises,” the Catalan told Esports Cope radio show.
“If he does so then I think we can all move on, but if not then it is unforgivable.
“No matter what he personally thinks, the president of LaLiga cannot express himself like that.
“It seems like Tebas hates Barcelona and he cannot hate any team, especially not one like Barcelona.
“If he does not apologise then he must leave his post, as he is supposed to be impartial.
“He cannot insinuate that players are feigning injury as he must protect them even if it were the case.”
Speaking about the club’s response to the situation, Gaspart explained that he believed they had handled it well.
Also featured on the programme was Neymar’s father, who suggested that Tebas should not comment since he was not at the Mestalla for the match.
