Gavi Close To Leaving Barcelona On Free Transfer?

Gavi Close To Leaving Barcelona On Free Transfer?

Barcelona are reportedly still working on extending midfielder Gavi’s contract beyond the end of the season.

Although being only 18 years old, the academy graduate has already made 83 appearances for Barcelona and 17 caps for Spain.

The Catalan giants naturally see the teenager as an important player for years to come, with the goal of tying Gavi down to a long-term contract.

While Gavi is under contract until 2026, it is claimed that the necessary paperwork for his registration is unavailable.

The Catalan clubwanted Gavi to become a senior player in the eyes of La Liga so that his £7.1 million salary would be covered by the club’s budget for the season.

Barcelona wanted Gavi to progress from a youth to a senior player in the eyes of La Liga, which would result in the player’s £7.1m wages being included in the club’s budget for the season.

However, La Liga ruled that they would run over budget, and the Mercantile Court of Barcelona dismissed their efforts to appeal the verdict since the required paperwork was not completed on time.

According to Relevo, Barcelona will make an appeal, and Gavi could theoretically be registered later this summer.

However, La Liga have previously declared that Barcelona must first raise £177M before registering new players, a criterion that presently applies to Gavi despite his already being at the club.

As things are, Barcelona will have to look for answers during the next transfer window, possibly by selling a number of players to obtain the necessary finances.

If Gavi remains unregistered, his contract could be terminated, allowing him to leave Barcelona as a free agent.
