Barcelona midfielder Gavi has officially been stripped of first-team status at the club amid a contract registration row. The player would also have to give up his No.6 shirt.
The 18-year-old inherited the iconic squad number, which was previously worn by current Blaugrana coach Xavi after agreeing to new terms in September.
After agreeing to new terms in September, the 18-year-old midfielder inherited the iconic squad number, which was previously worn by current Blaugrana coach Xavi.
However, La Liga have blocked the registration of a new contract as Barcelona continues to struggle financially.
The Catalan giants are over budget for 2022–23, hence La Masia graduate Gavi will have to continue playing for the club in Juvenil A for the time being. La Liga made this announcement when updating Barcelona’s squad list on their official website.
Gavi will revert to the No.30 jersey he wore while making his senior debut at Barcelona, and will do so when Xavi’s side returns to domestic play following the international break with a trip to Elche on Saturday.

Barcelona are convinced that they can free up money on their wage bill to sign Gavi this summer, despite interest from Bayern Munich.
The Blaugrana have also secured new contracts with Ronald Araujo, Marcos Alonso, and Sergi Roberto this season, and have been linked with a spectacular bid to bring Lionel Messi back to the club as a free agent after his contract at Paris Saint-Germain expires.
