Genk confirm Reds’ Berge interest

Genk sporting director Dimitri De Conde has confirmed Liverpool and Napoli are interested in signing Sander Berge. At just 21 years of age, Norway international Berge has emerged as one of Europe’s most sought-after midfielders, not least following his impressive performances for Genk in the Champions League this season.
Berge has played every minute of Genk’s campaign in Europe so far this season, including against their group rivals Napoli and Liverpool, both of whom are now interested in signing the youngster, according to De Conde. “Napoli are interested in Sander, it’s a possibility a deal could be done,” De Conde told Radio Punto Nuovo. “We also know that Liverpool are interested and [Jurgen] Klopp, after the game at Anfield, complimented him on his performance.”
However, De Conde has now ruled out the possibility of Berge leaving Genk in January, with Liverpool likely to have to wait until the summer if they are to pursue a deal for a player that Genk signed from Norwegian club Valerenga in January 2017. “Our intention is to hold on to Sander until the end of the season, but we can’t make any predictions,” De Conde added. “If the big clubs come knocking at our door, we will have to start negotiations, just as the agent has to do.”
Central midfield has been an area where Liverpool have been tipped to strengthen in the past, although the performances of the likes of Jordan Henderson, Fabinho and Georginio Wijnaldum means Berge may have to bide his time if he does end up making the move to Anfield.
Berge has featured 20 times for Genk across all competitions this season, while he is currently away on international duty with Norway for their upcoming Euro 2020 qualifiers against the Faroe Islands and Malta.
