Following the 0-0 draw between Manchester United and Chelsea on Monday
evening, BT Sport pundit Steven Gerrard praised Red Devils attacker Anthony
Martial.
The Red Devils failed to find the net again at Old Trafford – the sixth time
in all competitions that has been the case at home this season – but the 20-
year-old was part of many of his side’s best bits of play.
“Martial tore [Branislav] Ivanovic apart for 90 minutes,” Gerrard said.
The France striker registered two attempts in the game, one of which hit the
inside of the post, while he also created one glorious opportunity.
He reached the byline and pulled the ball back to the onrushing Ander
Herrera, but the Spaniard could only fire the ball straight at Thibaut
Courtois from close-range.
Martial only completed two of his six take-ons, but he gave Blues veteran
Ivanovic a tough time all evening.
The former Monaco man will likely one day be the main central striker at Old
Trafford, but for now it seems he will have to share that role with skipper
Wayne Rooney.
He didn’t seem fazed by being on the wing on Monday though, and in fact he
looked as dangerous as he has at any point this campaign.
Martial has now completed 39 take-ons in the league this season – 20 more
than any other United player this term.
He is also the joint-top scorer in the team, with four goals from 14 league
outings.
In their next game, sixth-placed Manchester United face Swansea City in the
Premier League, before an FA Cup third round tie with Sheffield United.
