Chelsea have confirmed that goalkeeper Edouard Mendy will be sidelined for the foreseeable future after fracturing his finger in training.
Due to a string of poor performances and Kepa Arrizabalaga’s form, the Senegal international has been limited to just 10 starts and one substitute appearance.
Mendy made four starts before the World Cup due to an injury to Arrizabalaga, but he has not appeared in the Blues squad since their return to action.
The 30-year-old has been dealing with a shoulder issue, which Graham Potter hinted was close to being resolved in order for him to return to the first-team squad.
However Mendy has been ruled out for several weeks after undergoing surgery on a fractured finger sustained in training this week.

While Chelsea has not stipulated a timeframe for his return, he will now “work closely with the club’s medical department during his rehabilitation phase,” according to a statement.
Chelsea will play four games from January 8 to January 21, beginning and ending with trips to Manchester City and Liverpool.
Between those games are London derbies against Fulham and Crystal Palace, and Mendy will be hoping to be back in action when Chelsea hosts the former on February 3.

N’Golo Kante, Reece James, Wesley Fofana, Ben Chilwell, Armando Broja, and Ruben Loftus-Cheek are also out for the visit to the Etihad Stadium.
Mendy’s injury comes as speculation mounts that he will not sign a new contract at Stamford Bridge.
Despite having two and a half years left on his current contract, the Champions League winner is said to have turned down a longer deal due to losing his place as first choice since Potter’s arrival.
