Goals must be shared out – Lascelles

Jamaal Lascelles says it is the responsibility of the whole team to chip in with goals rather than just the forwards. The centre-back opened the scoring during Newcastle’s 1-1 draw with Wolves on Sunday as he rose in the six-yard box to head home a perfect cross from defensive partner Federico Fernandez.
However, Wolves grabbed the equalising goal midway through the second half after goalkeeper Martin Dubravka, fresh from signing a new long-term contract with the Toon, fumbled a Matt Doherty cross into the path of Jonny Castro who finished well from close range.
The draw means Newcastle remain 17th after what has been a difficult start to life under new boss Steve Bruce.
Goalscoring has been an issue for the club as well, with only six goals being scored all season in the Premier League – only Watford have a poorer record.
They are also well adrift at the bottom of the expected goals charts and have seen their strikers struggle to find the back of the net.
Joelinton, a £40million summer acquisition, has only managed one goal in 10 games, though it was a match-winner away at Tottenham in August as they triumphed 1-0.
Miguel Almiron is still waiting for his first goal in black and white colours having joined from MLS side Atlanta Untied in January, despite generally impressing with is performances.
And, no player has managed to score more than one goal in all competitions this season.
Despite the difficulties their forwards are facing, captain Lascelles feels everyone must try and chip in with goals to alleviate the burden.
He told NUFC TV: “I think we’re finally starting to get it, we’re starting to create more chances and we’re finally starting to get there. “But goals don’t just come from one striker, everyone can chip in with them, so we aren’t putting too much pressure on one person because he needs the service, he needs people supporting him, he needs people to allow him to get into good positions and runners off him.”
Newcastle will hope to find their shooting boots in time for their trip to the Olympic Stadium to face West Ham on Saturday.
