Graham Potter’s Chelsea Sacking Extends Premier League Record

The dismissals of Graham Potter and Brendan Rodgers by Chelsea and Leicester City, respectively, extended a new season high for Premier League manager dismissals.

Chelsea moved to end Potter’s reign after just seven months following a 2-0 defeat by Aston Villa at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

Interestingly, with the exits of Potter and Rodgers, there have now been 13 managerial layoffs in the English top division this season.

The previous high was 10, which occurred three times in 2013–14, 2017–18, and 2021–22 respectively.

Potter isn’t even the first Chelsea manager to be fired this season; the club’s new owners also unexpectedly fired Thomas Tuchel earlier in the campaign.

Meanwhile, Antonio Conte, another high-profile manager, was recently fired by Tottenham. Aston Villa, Everton, and Leeds United are other teams that have made managerial changes this season.

It’s getting more and more difficult for managers to hold on to their jobs in the modern game, and this record-breaking season is arguably pretty damning for the state of the English Premier League.

Of course, sometimes teams have to make a change and Chelsea certainly looked like they were heading in the wrong direction under Graham Potter.

However, gone are the days when managers would get time to build something and turn things around even after difficult starts.
