Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has revealed that he took Vincent Kompany off at half time against Manchester United as the defender told him that he wasn’t able to continue playing.
Kompany, who has endured much misfortune with injuries in recent years, was making just his fourth appearance of the campaign and didn’t appear to be at his sharpest during his 45 minutes on the field.
Guardiola told Sky Sports: “He told me he could not play anymore.
“I’m so proud of our performance. At that level when you arrive to be more clinical in the last pass it’s always difficult against United.
“They did it good [despite the changes]. Maffeo was amazing fighting with Rashford and Pogba, so I’m so proud. We’re happy.
“I tried to win here, next season we will try but we focus on the other competitions.”
Guardiola didn’t disclose the nature of Kompany’s problem, but the Belgian will undoubtedly be hugely frustrated with his situation.
United prevailed with a 1-0 victory in the EFL Cup fixture, with Juan Mata scoring the only goal of the game in the second half.
Kompany is one of City’s most experienced players, but he hasn’t made the desired impact in his appearances so far this campaign and has been successful with just 25% of his attempted tackles in the Premier League this campaign.
