Haaland On The Brink To Equal 94-Year Record Against Leeds United

Manchester City striker, Erling Braut Haaland could equal a club record when the Cityzens host Leeds United at the weekend.

The 22-year-old broke the record for the most goals scored in a single season in the Premier League when his dinked finish gave Man City a comfortable win over West Ham United.

With 35 goals in the top-flight, he shattered the record set by Andy Cole in 1993/94 and Alan Shearer in 1994/95. Both of whom scored 34 goals in a 42-game season in the league.

The Norwegian star will have the opportunity to set yet another record when the Cityzens host Leeds at the Etihad on Saturday afternoon. He has previously stated that he would trade his individual honors for three trophies this season.

Which Record Is Next On Haaland’s Sight?

According to Manchester Evening News, if Haaland scores a hat-trick against the Yorkshire club, he will equal the club record most league goals in a season. Tommy Johnson, who scored 38 goals in the 1928–1929 First Division season, currently holds the honor. His amazing achievement set a record that has been in place for almost a century.

Johnson, who represented City from 1919 until 1930, scored 158 league goals for the Blues. Equalled Eric Brook’s record and trailed only legendary striker, Sergio Aguero’s 184.

For the first time in his young Premier League career, Haaland would need to score four or more goals in a game in order to possibly surpass Johnson’s record this weekend.

According to historian and author Dr. Gary James, Johnson’s son Alan stated that his father always desired an individual to attempt to surpass his feat.

“Alan Johnson once told me several years ago: ‘Dad always wanted someone to break his record,'” said James. “He looked forward to congratulating the man who did, but as time’s gone by it seems unlikely it will ever go.

“That’s a shame. Dad always thought records are something to aim for. They need to be broken.”
