Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff believes Lewis Hamilton will one day shatter Michael Schumacher’s records in the sport. The 34-year-old is on the verge of winning his sixth World Driver’s Championship, which will be confirmed if team-mate Valtteri Bottas fails to win the US Grand Prix on Sunday. That would put him second in the all-time list and just one Championship behind former Ferrari and Benetton great Schumacher. As well as the number of titles, Hamilton is only eight races short of matching Schumacher’s record of 91 Grand Prix wins. Team boss Wolff, instrumental in helping Hamilton achieve such feats, believes he will eventually beat the records set by Schumacher, as long as his hunger and desire remains. “I think he’s going to race as long as he feels he enjoys it and that he is competitive enough,” Wolff told Reuters when asked if he saw Hamilton racing into his 40s like Schumacher. “There is an age factor, that isn’t kicking in and that hasn’t happened (yet). Kimi (Raikkonen) has had his 40th birthday so why not? “In between, we need to continue to deliver a good enough car. If we do that, then yes he could shatter (Schumacher’s records).”
