Hammers eye Portuguese keeper ahead of January window

West Ham are one of four Premier League clubs reportedly eyeing Olympiakos goalkeeper Jose Sa ahead of the transfer window amid concerns about back-up Roberto. Reports in Greece have indicated that Sa has caught the attention of the Hammers, alongside Leicester City, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Arsenal, with some impressive displays for the Pireus club in the Champions League so far this season, particularly against Bayern Munich.
The 26-year-old David de Gea lookalike made nine saves during his side’s 2-0 defeat to Bayern on matchday four with two in particular, those to deny Kingsley Coman and Thomas Mueller, coming right out of the top drawer of any goalkeeper’s repertoire.
Scouts from Premier League clubs are always on the lookout for fresh talent and Sa is a fast-rising keeper who was a mere back-up in Porto before making the switch to Greece.
And with West Ham facing a problem in goal following Roberto’s inconsistent display against Burnley last time out, it would be no surprise to see the Hammers exploring their options in that position when January rolls around.
Roberto has not convinced supporters – and seemingly some of the team-mates in front of him alike – since being drafted in last month after the injury to first-choice stopper Lukasz Fabianski.
His flappy display at Turf Moor left many thinking that, although he appears a capable shot-stopper, he will be found out by teams that pepper the box with crosses.
Fabianski is due to return in January, but how quickly the proven Pole gets back up to speed after his lay-off remains to be seen.
West Ham could also consider Sa, who is eight years younger than Fabianski, as a potential long-term successor to the ex-Arsenal goalkeeper, who has 18 months left on his contract at London Stadium.
Hammers sporting director Mario Husillos has been spotted watching Olympiakos matches this year and will have no problem in picking up the phone to his former employers and finding out more.
Sa’s agent is Jorge Mendes and West Ham have been linked with a few of his clients in recent times, although Raul Jimenez went to Wolves and Paulo Fonseca stayed with Shakhtar Donetsk before eventually landing in Rome.
