Manchester United captain Harry Maguire has vowed to keep fighting to regain his starting spot in the middle of the team’s defence.
Despite having a difficult season in 2021–2022, the 29-year-old retained the armband over the summer and started the season in the first XI.
However, after poor performances against Brighton & Hove Albion and Brentford, the England international was demoted to the bench.
Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez are the club’s first-choice center-backs, and Victor Lindelof appears to be ahead of Maguire in the pecking order.
In recent weeks, Luke Shaw has also been used as a centre-back, with the full-back impressing in that position.
Maguire played the full 90 minutes against Bournemouth in the Premier League on January 3, and he also started and finished Tuesday’s 3-0 win over Charlton Athletic in the EFL Cup quarter-finals.
Maguire said it “felt good” to play against Charlton as he works to regain full fitness after suffering from an illness after the World Cup.

The club captain has also vowed to fight for his starting spot, despite reports that he could leave this year.
‘It felt good, I played last week as well against Bournemouth,’ Maguire told ESPN (via Daily Mail).
‘I was unfortunate in terms of when I come back from the World Cup, I had a bad illness, to be honest, and it knocked me back for one or two weeks.
‘I feel good now.
‘We have a lot of good centre-halves at this club, there’s a lot of competition for places and I’ll keep fighting.’
The former Sheffield United youngster has now played 158 times across all competitions for Man United, recording seven goals and five assists.
