Goalkeeper Joe Hart is keen to continue his career for a few more years but will probably have to leave Burnley in the summer. The 32-year-old has seen his career stall with the Clarets as Nick Pope is the undisputed number one, playing in the Premier League while Hart has enjoyed just one outing this term in the Carabao Cup.
It is all a far cry from a few years ago, when the Shrewsbury-born shot-stopper was England’s number one while he had made 348 appearances in all competitions for Manchester City.
Pep Guardiola’s arrival at the Etihad Stadium changed that and the man capped 75 times by the Three Lions was deemed surplus to requirements.
Loan spells at Serie A club Torino and West Ham United followed before he penned a two-year deal at Turf Moor in the summer of 2018.
Things began well in Lancashire, with 19 top-flight outings before Pope was handed the responsibility between the posts.
Hart is now on the peripheries and he admits that his journey since leaving the Citizens has not been easy. “It’s been really frustrating because I moved away from Manchester City fully intending on keeping my England shirt,” he told BT Sport. “So I made decisions that had to be made but they weren’t necessarily great future moves for me but I appreciate the clubs that took me on.”
Everton’s Jordan Pickford is now firmly established as the England custodian and Hart’s chance of adding to his international caps seems slim but he still has a hunger to play football at the highest level.
Sean Dyche cannot offer him what he requires and it seems likely that there will be a parting of the ways next summer. “I’d love an opportunity but I’m going to keep fighting for Burnley, my contract is up in the summer so we will see where that takes me,” added Hart.
