Hasenhuttl undecided who gets the gloves for leaky Saints

Ralph Hasenhuttl admits he has a tough decision to make over whether to stick with Alex McCarthy in goal or bring back Angus Gunn on Saturday. Gunn was between the sticks for last Friday’s embarrassing 9-0 loss to Leicester City, taking the number of goals he has conceded in Premier League action this season to 25.
The 23-year-old has struggled to convince at times for the Saints since being handed the No.1 jersey but had looked solid in the opening weeks of the season.
However, his place in the Southampton XI appears to in jeopardy once more after the Leicester debacle with McCarthy having impressed in Tuesday’s Carabao Cup last-16 loss to Manchester City.
Despite conceding three times, the reigning English champions and EFL Cup holders could have racked up a much bigger scoreline had it not been for several smart saves from the 29-year-old keeping the south coast outfit in the tie.
Ahead of Saturday’s return to the Etihad Stadium in the league, Hasenhuttl admits he has a big call to make over whether to bring back Gunn for the meeting with his former club. “It was not an easy evening for Angus against Leicester and Alex made a good job on Tuesday evening against Man City,” said the Austrian. “He made a few good saves and his body language made for a good performance. I haven’t decided what I want to do.”
Were McCarthy to keep his place in the Southampton side then it would represent a remarkable turnaround in fortunes for the ex-Reading stopper, who was linked with a move away from St Mary’s during the summer before the club chose to loan out Fraser Forster to Celtic.
Elsewhere, Hasenhuttl has been talking about how the whole squad have taken on board the lessons of last Friday’s home defeat to Leicester.
The 52-year-old believes the events of last week have made him a better and stronger manager but he will need to put the lessons of the 9-0 loss into action quickly if he is to retain his position.
Hasenhuttl is the favourite to be the next Premier League manager to be sacked with bookmakers, having overseen just two league wins this season.
