Chelsea star Eden Hazard is the only player in the Premier League who can end Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi‘s stronghold over the Ballon d’Or, according to Paul Merson.
The Belgian winger has been in breathtaking form again this season after a little dip last term, and Merson feels he is the player best equipped to challenge for the coveted annual prize.
Still, Merson also expects that Ronaldo and Messi, who are the only two players to win the prize every year since 2008, will continue to share it between them a few more times at least.
‘Eden Hazard is the only player in the Premier League who has a chance of being a Ballon d’Or winner,’ Merson wrote in his column in the Daily Star.
‘But you can almost guarantee the next three or four will be shared between Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi whatever anyone else does.
‘No one wins games 7-0 or 8-0 in the Premier League like they can in La Liga. Ask Pep Guardiola.
‘This is why Hazard won’t win a Ballon d’Or while he’s playing here.
‘I’m a big fan of his and if he gets his head right he could be on the same level as Messi and Ronaldo. But it won’t happen here.’
