Roberto Martinez’s Belgium made it two wins from two in World Cup qualifying as they stylishly beat Bosnia-Herzegovina 4-0 in Brussels.
Chelsea winger Eden Hazard scored a brilliant goal as Belgium, under the stewardship of former Everton manager Martinez, maintained their 100% winning record in World Cup qualifying Group H with the emphatic victory in Brussels.
After a nervy opening 25 minutes Belgium were ahead courtesy of shambolic Bosnian defending when defender Emir Spahić turned the ball past his own goalkeeper.
Three minutes later and with the home side rampant, Chelsea winger Eden Hazard latched onto a pass from Dries Mertens to brilliantly skip past his club team-mate Asmir Begovic in the Bosnian goal.
Mertens again played his role in assisting his Belgian team-mates by whipping in a dangerous corner for Spurs defender Toby Alderweireld to brilliantly flick home.
The game’s only negative point for Roberto Martinez’s side came midway through the second half when Everton striker Romelu Lukaku inexplicably fired over from six yards out.
In a swift counter-attack, Yannick Carrasco found himself bearing down on goal before deciding to unselfishly square the ball to Lukaku to tap home into an empty net only to see his effort fly over the bar – much to shock of his team-mates.
However, the 23-year-old striker did manage to make amends for his miss by finding the net with a deflected strike with 10 minutes remaining.
In truth Bosnia never found a way of dealing with the threat of Belgium’s ruthless No.10 who continually found gaps in between the defence and midfield.
Hazard, who continued to run at the Bosnian defenders, can count himself fortunate not to pick up an injury in the latter stages of the game as the opposition continued to scythe him down out of pure frustration.
Belgium’s next fixture is on Monday night with a trip to Gibraltar.
