Tom Cairney, the captain of Fulham, asserted that referee Stuart Attwell had acknowledged his error in awarding Liverpool’s game-winning penalty.
Mohamed Salah’s 39th-minute penalty helped Liverpool defeat the Cottagers 1-0 in the final minutes.
Issa Diop was found to have fouled Darwin Nunez as the striker rushed to steal the ball from the Fulham defender. Leading to the penalty kick being given.
Attwell made the decision to give the penalty kick, and VAR did not reverse it. Infuriating Cairney and his Fulham teammates.
According to Daily Mail, Cairney said Attwell informed one of his teammates that the incorrect decision had been made.
What Did Tom Cairney Say About The Penalty Incident?
Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, he said: ‘The ref made a decision, I thought he had seen contact. I asked him ‘please just make sure they (VAR) check it’.
‘He said they had checked it but then he said in the second-half to one of our players that it wasn’t a penalty.
‘So it’s frustrating because it goes to other people to make the correct decision.
‘Issa Diop hasn’t touched him. Nunez has taken another step and then gone over. And then you lose to something like that at Anfield which is frustrating when we’re trying to climb as high as we can,’ he concluded.
The Reds’ triumph over Fulham was their fifth straight win; their longest streak of the season. In what has been a disappointing season for the team.
