Thierry Henry has warned those Arsenal fans who wish to see Arsene Wenger leave to “be careful what they wish for”.
Wenger has enjoyed a fine start to the final season of his contract; his Arsenal side lie level with Manchester City and Liverpool at the top of the table with Tottenham and Chelsea a point behind.
Their strong start has helped to quell the vocal section of supporters who have often called for the manager to move on after over 20 years at Arsenal but with Wenger unlikely to sign a new deal in the near future it would only take a run of poor performances for pressure to mount on the manager.
“Be careful what you wish for because when he’s not going to be around people are going to realise what he was doing at the time,” said the Arsenal legend.
“It looks like finally things are going the right way… It would be great if in his 20th season in charge he can win the title. But are they going to do it? The competition is massive.”
Manchester United have discovered to their cost that the departure of a long-serving manager can lead to a period of turbulence and are on to their third manager since Sir Alex Ferguson retired just over three years ago.
Should Wenger decide to move it has been suggested that Wembley and the England national team could be his next destination. However Henry, like his former team-mate Robert Pires, doubts his one-time manager could cope without the day-to-day bustle of club football.
“You can never say never, but I don’t see it happening,” Henry, who last summer left Arsenal to join new Belgium coach Roberto Martinez’s staff, said. “I said recently that Arsene likes being on the pitch on a daily basis, and that’s not the case when you coach a national team.”
