Herrera has proved me wrong at Manchester United – Gary Neville

Ander Herrera has proven himself as a Manchester United player over the past 12 months, according to Gary Neville.

The Spaniard, who arrived at Old Trafford from La Liga outfit Athletic Bilbao in the summer of 2014, is enjoying his best campaign to date in a United shirt and is arguably one of the first names on the teamsheet under Jose Mourinho.

His importance to the Red Devils was underlined during the 2-0 win over Chelsea last month as he carried out strict instructions to man mark Eden Hazard out of the game to perfection and Neville admits he’s been proven wrong by the midfielder.

“There’s no way in the world I thought he was a Man Utd player, I thought he was too nice. If there is a job to be done, even if it’s not a nice job, he’ll do it,” Neville said on Sky Sports.

“I’ve shifted my opinion on him quite a lot over the past six to twelve months.”

Prior to this afternoon’s clash against Arsenal at Emirates Stadium, Herrera had made more interceptions (84), registered more assists (6) and won more tackles (63) than any player in the United squad and had completed 1,729 passes – second to only Paul Pogba.

He was included in the starting XI alongside Wayne Rooney and Michael Carrick for the game in north London as United look for the victory that will take them to within a point of the top four in the Premier League table.
