I Don’t Think I Can Be England’s Number One At The World Cup, Says Arsenal Goalie Ramsdale

Arsenal goalie, Aaron Ramsdale, has told The Yours, Mine, Away Podcast that he believes the World Cup has arrived too soon for him to be Gareth Southgate’s first choice.

Arsenal had only one player called up to the Three Lions squad in 2018. However, there may well be a number of representatives from the Gunners’ ranks this time.

In Qatar, Bukayo Saka will undoubtedly be one of England’s first starters. Also, if there had been no injury, Emile Smith Rowe would have been at least a squad member.

Ben White meanwhile, has to be in contention. The centre-back has been a revelation on the right for Mikel Arteta’s side so far this season.

What Did The Arsenal Goalie Say About His World Cup Chances?

Ramsdale is another name that is undoubtedly going to the tournament. Over the past 12 months, the goalie has been absolutely terrific. He is currently Emirates’ unquestioned number one.

He also has few caps for his nation to his name. However, given the current situation, it does seem that he does not anticipate playing much over the winter.

He said on The Yours, Mine, Away Podcast, “I think the World Cup personally is six months too soon for me to really challenge.”

“And I’ve said this a few times, it’s not really for people to go: ‘oh no, you should be number one’. I’m being realistic, I’ve played three times for England with a World Cup coming in six weeks. I’m not really going to play.

“But that’s not me throwing the towel in. I’m fighting to be that starting goalkeeper. But if I’m not, I’ll support whoever is the best that I can.”

It is difficult to think that Southgate would choose anyone else over Jordan Pickford.

Pickford has consistently performed admirably for England. And in recent months, he has given some incredible performances for Everton. Nevertheless, Ramsdale can still compete for a spot on the team.
