I Love Manchester United, But What Happened There Is Too Painful To Discuss

Former Manchester United defender Phil Jones has stated that the Reds’ collapse has been difficult for him to discuss.

Jones joined from Blackburn Rovers in July 2011 and made 229 appearances before departing in 2023 and formally retiring a year later. While his latter years at Old Trafford were marred by injuries, the centre-back remained a consistent presence at Carrington and even helped train the youth players.

Unsurprisingly, United’s current form has touched near to home for the former defender. United plummeted to 15th place on Sunday after losing 1-0 at Tottenham Hotspur.

With 13 matches left, the Reds are only 12 points above the relegation zone. Their current points count would only keep them in the division for two of the last ten Premier League seasons, with up to 38 points required to ensure survival.

Jones revealed on the Footy Accumulators No Tippy Tappy Football podcast that under Ruben Amorim, things would only become worse before improving. “Clearly (the standard at Manchester United) has dropped off,” said the coach.

“Manchester United is in a really tough situation, and I believe it has been a trend over the last four or five years, which is why we are where we are. I believe it was always going to grow worse before it got better.

“We had another difficult result again the other day at Tottenham. We maybe could’ve nicked a draw.

“It’s difficult to understand where we can improve, and discussing it is even more challenging. I adore the club; I adore the people that work there, the players, and it’s heartbreaking to see what’s going on right now.”
