Ian Wright Suggests A Tactical Tweak For England Including Cole Palmer And Bukayo Saka

Despite having Harry Kane, Phil Foden, and Bukayo Saka leading the line for England, Gareth Southgate has struggled to get the team to click moving forward. Kane scored against Denmark, and Jude Bellingham scored a header against Serbia in the first game, but the team has struggled in front of goal overall.

However, the manager does have talented options to turn to in the competition’s knockout stages to turn around the nation’s fortunes in terms of creativity and goal scoring. Kane has frequently appeared alone and has not played as much as he would like.

Ian Wright’s Solution to England Woes

Wright was working as a commentator for ITV to cover England’s final group stage encounter, and the former striker shared his radical ideas on how the team might get the most out of their superstar forward, Kane. The 60-year-old believes Palmer should be given more time, saying, “He’s looking to get it into you every time he receives the ball. He wants to move it ahead, play one-twos; he’s a progressive player.

The Chelsea star has only played 19 minutes out of a possible 270 in Germany, but he looked smart when he was introduced against Slovenia. The issue for Southgate is that another of his greatest players, Saka, also played on the right wing. So, how should this dilemma be  solved? Well, Wright claimed.

“I saw a number that Kieran Trippier was our second-most productive player in terms of touches and passes. I’m wondering how we’ll get Palmer on the team if that is the case. Given Saka’s natural left-sidedness, could you perhaps place him at left back and Palmer on the right? Simply because we need to restore some balance and fluency in the game.”
