Zlatan Ibrahimovic admits he’s happy to have proven his doubters wrong after helping Manchester United lift the EFL Cup with a 3-2 win over Southampton.
The 35-year-old was the star of the show at Wembley as his brace was enough to overcome a spirited Saints side which had battled back from a 2-0 deficit thanks to a quickfire double in either half from Manolo Gabbiadini.
Having broken the deadlock with a free-kick early in the first-half, Ibrahimović would go on to have the last laugh as he planted a header past Fraser Forster with just three minutes remaining of normal time to take his tally of goals to 26 across all competitions.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Ibrahimović expressed a delight at securing his first trophy in the colours of United.
“It was very nice. We were winning by two, we looked tired but I scored again.
“This is what I came for, I came to win. The more I win, the more staisfied I get. Today was a team effort, this wasn’t about me. The older I got, the more surrounded I got by the winning mentality. It’s all about winning.
“Wherever I went, I won. This is what I predicted. I came here to show everyone what I could do. People said I couldn’t do it. My friend, I am doing it.”
Paul Pogba, another arrival at Old Trafford last summer, hailed the impact that Ibrahimovic has had at the club in such a short space of time and that would spark a jovial retort from the striker.
The France international said: “That’s why we bought him, from which Zlatan responded: “Bought me? I came for free. They bought you.”
