Ibrahimovic condems “lack of respect” shown towards Rooney

Manchester United striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic has slammed the lack of respect shown towards Wayne Rooney so far this season.

Rooney started another game for United last night as the Red Devils thrashed the Eredivisie league leaders, Feyenoord, 4-0 at Old Trafford.

The United skipper got in on the scoring to become the club’s all-time top scorer in European competitions with 39 goals while he also grabbed an assist in the rout.

While being in and out of the first-team in recent weeks and picked up plenty of criticism and Ibrahimovic has now slammed the lack of respect he’s received.

Ibrahimovic told BT Sport post-match: “People talk, people write; I mean I really don’t know what has happened and I’m 100 per cent sure the media doesn’t really know the real story.

“He is a public person; he is a captain for the national team, for the club and people want to write about him.

“I think there is a lack of respect and just pushing out everything instead of appreciating him for who he is and what he has done, so I think the situation is exaggerated.

“I have the same thing when it comes to me.”

Rooney was dropped from the Man United starting line-up by Jose Mourinho after their 3-1 defeat to Watford in late-September.

He has since made a return to the starting XI against Swansea City but was back on the bench against Arsenal last weekend.

Given his superb display at Old Trafford last night, Rooney may well lead the Red Devils out again when they play West Ham at the weekend.
