Luis Suarez has hailed his former Barcelona teammate Lionel Messi as “the best” after the legendary forward helped Argentina reach the World Cup final.
Messi scored and contributed in Argentina’s semi-final win against Croatia, and he is now one match away from lifting the World Cup trophy for the first time.
After Julian Alvarez was awarded a disputed spot-kick, the Paris Saint-Germain star hammered a first-half penalty past Dominik Livakovic, who had shone in Croatia’s previous shootout victories over Brazil and Japan.
Alvarez then went on a spectacular run from just inside the Croatian half, culminating with the Manchester City attacker sliding home to extend Argentina’s advantage shortly before halftime.
Messi and Alvarez teamed to score Argentina’s third goal in the second half, with Messi skillfully dribbling past Josko Gvardiol before his 22-year-old teammate scored a cut-back.
It was another masterpiece from Messi, who has been one of the stars of Qatar 2022, which will very certainly be his final World Cup.
‘You never get tired of showing that you are the best in the world,’ Messi’s former Barcelona team-mate Suarez wrote on Instagram.

Meanwhile, Leicester and England midfielder James Maddison expressed admiration for the PSG star despite admitting he wasn’t sure if he would watch the rest of the World Cup.
He wrote on Twitter: “Wasn’t sure whether I was going to watch the rest of the World Cup after we were eliminated… but how can you turn down the opportunity to watch Leo Messi when he can still play to that level at the age of 35. Honestly astonishing.”
Jamie Carragher also posted: ” #Messi the best there has ever been!”
