An Andres Iniesta injury slightly marred Barcelona’s quarter-final first leg win over Real Sociedad in the Copa del Rey on Thursday, with the playmaker substituted after suffering a calf injury.
The Blaugrana claimed a crucial away goal, and their first win at the Anoeta in over a decade, after Neymar struck the only blow of the match with a spot-kick in the 21st minute, handing the visitors the advantage ahead of the return match next week.
However, the win was dampened when the 32-year-old was forced to withdraw at half-time, with Andre Gomes coming on as his replacement.
It has now emerged that Iniesta suffered a slight niggle on his left calf, with the club confirming that Spain international will undergo further testing on Friday.
“Iniesta was substituted due to a problem with his left calf. [On Friday], he will have more tests back in Barcelona,” a statement from the club read.
The midfielder’s latest setback comes after the 2010 World Cup winner was sidelined for six weeks after suffering a knock to the knee in October.
Whilst it was initially feared that he would miss the remainder of the season, Iniesta returned during Barcelona’s 1-1 draw against Real Madrid in El Clasico and was at the forefront of a recent resurgence of form, with Luis Enrique’s men winning five consecutive matches.
Barcelona are currently in third place in La Liga and are en route to progress to the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey.
