International Star Diagnosed With Cancer, Set To Be On Sideline For Several Months

Borussia Monchengladbach has revealed that defender Stefan Lainer has been diagnosed with lymphoma.

The 30-year-old, who has appeared in 125 games for the German club, will require medical treatment for the illness. And he will have to spend a significant amount of time on the sidelines.

However, the condition was discovered ‘very early’ and is manageable with medication, according to the doctor who diagnosed the malignancy.

In a statement posted on the club’s website, Gladbach director Roland Virkus, said: ‘We will do all we can to get Stevie the best possible treatment.

‘We wish him and his family lots of strength and optimism in the fight against this disease.’

Gladbach urged against disclosing any more information on Lainer’s illness or course of treatment.

Lainer, who moved from Austrian top-flight team Red Bull Salzburg in 2019, was ever-present in his first two campaigns in Germany.

The right-back did have a brief stint with the national team. But he missed a large portion of the following two seasons.

He played every match for Austria at EURO 2020, where he was one of the tournament’s top performances. Unfortunately, the team lost to eventual champions Italy in the round of 16.

Lainer participated in 17 Bundesliga games last season. Helping Gladbach to a 10th-place finish. The team’s 2023–24 season opens on August 9 with a trip to Augsburg.
