As his return to Manchester City was secured, Ilkay Gundogan revealed he left Barcelona in ‘tough’ circumstances.
The 33-year-old passed rejected a contract extension at Manchester City last summer to join Barcelona on a free transfer.
But after just one season in Catalonia, the German midfielder has returned to his previous club.
Barcelona was pleased to part ways with the player as they sought to reduce their wage cost, with Gundogan waiving the remaining two years of his salary in Spain.

In return, the Blaugrana permitted the Citizens to sign the five-time Premier League champion for free.
Gundogan, who will wear No.19 for City, has signed a one-year contract with the option to extend it for another year.
However, he has not been reappointed as the club’s captain, with Kyle Walker keeping the armband.
Gundogan expressed his regret at leaving Barcelona on social media, writing: “Dear culers [Barca fans], after just one year, it’s already time to say goodbye.”
In His Words?
“I came here expecting a new, interesting challenge, and I was prepared for it.
“I have given everything to fight for the team and the club the best possible way in a difficult season and I was looking forward to helping my teammates in the new campaign.
“Now I am leaving in a difficult situation, but if my departure can help the club financially, it makes me a bit less sad.
“Nevertheless, it’s been a time with incredible experiences and ups and downs – I always wanted to play at Barça, and I am very grateful for a memory and experience that I will remember for my life.
“I wish you the best for the season and in the future. The fans deserve to see this big club return to its world-class status.”
TalkSPORT revealed earlier this week that Gundogan was planning an emotional City comeback following seven trophy-laden seasons.
And, once manager Pep Guardiola approved the contract, City officials moved quickly to secure his services for the second time.
