A current Manchester United player has apparently hinted to Erik ten Hag potential successor, with former Liverpool midfielder Jason McAteer indicating that England manager Gareth Southgate could be in line for the position.
McAteer, who did not name the player, stated that the squad believes Ten Hag would not be retained beyond this season. The Dutch manager’s second season in command has been hard, and it appears to be ending on a worse note than last year’s third-place finish.

United’s chances of qualifying for European football are in risk after losing at home to Arsenal. If they lose against Newcastle in their forthcoming encounter, they would have to defeat Manchester City in the FA Cup final to qualify for European competition next season.
United’s recent loss also resulted in an unfavorable record, raising concerns over Ten Hag status. While an official statement about his future is not expected until after the FA Cup final, McAteer has given details from a conversation with a United player that indicate a managerial change is possible.
McAteer disclosed the details on beIN Sports, describing his interaction: “He plays for Manchester United, and I had a conversation with him on Friday, I bumped into him because I live just outside the area,” he claimed, as reported by The Mail.
McAteer later attempted to clarify his comments on social media. “Firstly I was told nothing by any Manchester United player … nothing ! ! ! ! and he certainly didn’t revel what he thought in fact all he did was smile at my question,” he claimed.
“My conclusion was based on my assumptions no one else’s. Oh and Manchester United’s results and performances maybe.”
