Martin Zubimendi claims he has received “no pressure” from his inner circle after rejecting a move to Liverpool in favour of sticking at Real Sociedad during the transfer window. The Reds saw the Spain international as someone who might thrive in Arne Slot’s midfield and were close to triggering a £51 million buyout clause last month.
Sporting director Richard Hughes was believed to have received guarantees from the 25-year-old regarding a move to Anfield, only for the boyhood Sociedad supporter to remain with the club that helped make him an international midfielder.

A charm offensive by the club was said to have influenced Zubimendi’s choice to stay with la Real for the upcoming season, and Liverpool were eventually forced to declare defeat and walk away from the deal in August.
Speaking to Marca while on international duty for the European Championship champions, Zubimendi stated that his family and friends did not pressure him to stay at San Sebastian, but he reiterated his affection for the club, which he joined as a teenager back in 2011.
“No, no, my friends are clear that whatever I decide [for my future] will be the best,” Zubimendi said. “There is no pressure whatsoever.
“Real Sociedad for me is my life, I think I have spent half my life there. A lot of what I am is part of la Real, it is my life.
“[Our goal to qualify for] Europe is clear. The higher the position, the better. We have to look for our best version and, above all, compete. To feel competitive, to be recognised and to be seen with personality.”
