In the crucial Premier League matchup between Liverpool and Manchester City, former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher thinks a draw is the best result for his old team.
The opening match following the international break pits the current top two teams in the English premier league against one another, with the reigning champions currently leading their opponents by one point.
Before the break, Pep Guardiola’s team drew with Chelsea in an intense match that featured eight goals, while Liverpool defeated Brentford to recover from a difficult stretch.
Although he will understand that this will be a significant test of his team’s credentials, Jurgen Klopp will have been pleased with his team’s strong start to the season after failing to mount a serious title challenge in an uneven campaign last year.
Furthermore, Carragher questions whether Liverpool’s defense can match that of their opponents.
“It will be tough – the best Liverpool will get is a draw,” Carragher suggested on The Overlap’s Stick to Football podcast. “Liverpool’s record [at the Etihad Stadium] is poor.
“Liverpool have the best goalkeeper in the world and they’ll definitely need [Alisson]. Liverpool’s defensive record has been really good this season and Virgil van Dijk has been not too far away from his best.
“But there are still chinks in the armour with [Andy] Robertson out, Trent [Alexander-Arnold] in that midfield going back to fullback, and I’m thinking of [Jeremy] Doku coming up against him. Also, Liverpool defensively in midfield still haven’t really got that top class number six, so it will be difficult. The best they’ll get is a draw.”
After 12 games, five teams are three points out of the top due to a competitive start to the season.
In their attempt to become the first team to win the English premier league in four consecutive seasons, Manchester City is still the heavy favorite to hold onto their title, even though Arsenal, Tottenham, and Aston Villa are all close behind.
At the Etihad Stadium, Liverpool’s most recent away Premier League victory occurred in 2015.
