Wolves striker Raul Jimenez says he wants his to aim high and is keen to one day play in the Champions League. Last season the Mexican forward was a key component in Wolves’ brilliant campaign as they qualified for the Europa League after finishing seventh.
Nuno’s side were ambitious following promotion from the Championship in the 2017-18 but not many would have predicted an ascent quite so steep.
Jimenez was a big part of that after joining on a season-long loan deal from Benfica as he scored 17 goals in 44 appearances in all competitions.
That was enough to convince the club to make the move permanent and he duly signed on the dotted line early in the summer for a fee of around £30million.
So far in the Europa League, Jimenez’s form has continued in the same vein as last season.
The 28-year-old has scored seven times in nine Europa League appearances, including the qualification period.
On Thursday, Wolves came from behind to defeat Slovakian outfit Slovan Bratislava to rise to second in their Europa League group, one point behind Portuguese rivals Sporting Braga.
However, Jimenez has put no limits on his ambitions and says Wolves should be aiming for Champions League football. “We want to do something special. Why not think about the Champions League? It will be difficult but we only finished nine points behind the top six last season so why not think bigger?,” he said. “It’s not going to fall from the sky, we need to work for it. You have to have a big target. If we were just happy with 10th place, it doesn’t feel important. When you dream big, I think you can do it better.”
Wolves go into their weekend clash against Newcastle currently 13th in the table, though have vastly improved their form after a slow start to the season.
They are unbeaten in four Premier League matches since losing 5-2 to Chelsea on September 14 and appear to be well on course for at least a mid-table finish.
