Cancelo, who is presently on loan at Barcelona, played for Bayern Munich in Germany during the latter part of the 2022–2023 season.
After reportedly having a falling out with Guardiola over a lack of playing time, the Portugal international was permitted to join the German team.
Cancelo’s response to being left out of the starting eleven in the face of competition from Nathan Ake and Rico Lewis was reportedly something that Guardiola was not pleased with.

In response, the full-back called Man City “ungrateful” and accused Guardiola of uttering “lies” in his comments.
“Lies were told!” stated Cancelo in an A Bola interview. “I’ve always been a good teammate for them; ask Rico (Lewis) or (Nathan) Ake.” That’s the manager’s opinion, but I don’t feel superior to them or inferior to them.
“I choose to stay because it is untrue. Given that I played a major role for Man City throughout my tenure, I believe they were a little unappreciative of me when they made that statement.
“I always gave everything I had to the team and the supporters, and I never failed in that regard. I was once robbed and attacked, and the next day I was playing against Arsenal at the Emirates. You never forget these experiences, as I left my wife and daughter alone at home, terrified.
“Mister Guardiola has far more influence than me when he speaks, and I would much rather keep to myself, so this is the only thing people will remember. I am satisfied with what I accomplished, and I would rather know that I am speaking the truth. I am an honest person; I never tell lies.
