Joao Cancelo, a defender for Portugal, has stated that the team is not solely reliant on superstar Cristiano Ronaldo, who is 39 years old.
Goal says Ronaldo turned 39 in February, but he hasn’t shown any signs of slowing down.
With 54 goals in 2023, he will be the world’s highest male goal scorer.
The superstar from Al-Nassr will be competing for gold once more in the summer at Euro 2024 with Portugal, but teammate Cancelo has stressed that the group is not solely dependent on its aging captain.
WHAT CANCELO MENTIONED
He told Portuguese network RTP: “He is an important player and spent 15 years competing with Messi for the Ballon d’Or, but the peak of a footballer’s career is between the ages of 25 and 32. He is an important player for us, but the national team does not depend entirely on him.”
Even though he is no longer at his best, Ronaldo will probably lead Portugal in the competition this summer in Germany.
The forward scored ten goals for Portugal in qualifying, surpassing both Kylian Mbappe and Harry Kane. Roberto Martinez’s team was the only one to finish with a perfect record.

However, Martinez’s squad does feature a number of other excellent attacking options, such as Rafael Leao, Bruno Fernandes, Goncalo Ramos, Joao Felix, and Bernardo Silva.
A number of Portugal players, including Cancelo and Ronaldo, have been rested ahead of their team’s upcoming friendly against Sweden on Thursday.
Both players will be back in the lineup for Portugal’s upcoming match against Slovenia on Tuesday.
