Jones admits Marler error

England coach Eddie Jones has confessed that should have selected Joe Marler ahead of Mako Vunipola in the Rugby World Cup final. The Red Rose were favourites to beat South Africa in the Japan showpiece but were thrashed 32-12 by a rampant Springbok side that stifled any attacking intent the English may have had. A powerful South African pack dominated the men in white and they conceded late tries as panic set in among the ranks when chasing the game. After the contest, the Australian tactician confessed that he was at a loss as to why his charges failed but, with the dust now settled, he has lifted the lid. “I accept that I made two selection mistakes for the final,” he wrote in his new autobiography ‘My Life and Rugby’, being serialised in The Times. “I should have chosen Joe Marler ahead of Mako Vunipola at loosehead prop and reverted to the Owen Farrell-Manu Tuilagi-Henry Slade midfield we used against Australia. “George Ford could have come off the bench when we had got into the game. But you never know until the game starts.”
