Jose Mourinho Wants Man Utd Return As Club Lay Out Stance On Him Replacing Erik Ten Hag

Jose Mourinho wants a stunning return to Manchester United, but he understands that the club does not want him back.

Mourinho, 61, has been out of work since being fired by Roma in January and has expressed a strong but unrealistic desire to be given another chance as manager of the Red Devils. The former Chelsea, Inter Milan, and Real Madrid manager was fired by United in December 2018, capping up a mixed two-and-a-half-season stint in which the club won three trophies but failed to truly push for the Premier League crown.

That was long before Sir Jim Ratcliffe joined the club, and while Mourinho regards the new United co-owner as a friend, he does not expect to be consulted if Erik ten Hag is fired.

Ten Hag’s job has come under growing scrutiny in recent months, with Monday’s terrible 4-0 loss against 14th-placed Crystal Palace standing as the pinnacle of a disastrous season. According to the Manchester Evening News, if Ratcliffe and Co pull the trigger, Mourinho is willing to ‘walk’ back to Old Trafford.

“My relationship with (former United executive vice-chairman) Ed Woodward was good,” Mourinho told the Telegraph. “Good as in the personal point of view. Even now we sent an SMS. But from a professional point of view it was not the best.

“I am who I am. I am a football man. Ed comes from a different background and what Ten Hag has in his time at Manchester United I didn’t have. I didn’t have that level of support. I didn’t have that level of trust.
