Adam Bogdan recalls Jurgen Klopp “class” gesture that cushioned the impact of being named third-choice goalkeeper.
The Hungarian joined Liverpool from Bolton Wanderers in 2015, shortly before Klopp took charge at Anfield. Bogdan had a notable performance before the German arrived, saving three penalties in a Carabao Cup shootout victory over Carlisle.

Following Klopp’s appointment, he was disappointingly demoted in the keepers’ pecking order. But Bogdan bears no grudges and recalls a kind gesture from Klopp that he will never forget.
“Danny Ward returned to the club in January 2016, a few months after Klopp arrived,” Bogdan exclusively told Ladbrokes Fanzone (via The Mirror). “I had no objections to that decision because I was not performing well.
“However, the way I learned about that decision was not pleasant, and that, along with the fact that I knew I wasn’t performing as well as I could, elicited a great deal of emotion from me.
“You start blaming yourself, and your head is down, and you just cannot afford to do that at elite clubs like Liverpool. Jurgen Klopp did, however, put me on the bench for the Carabao Cup Final.
“Even though I was third-choice at the time, he put me back on the bench, which was a gesture I’ll never forget.” That’s a great act from him, even if I ignore everything that happened with Danny returning to the club or whatever he thought of me. He recognised my contribution to that cup run and reinstated me in the squad at Wembley.
The Reds went on to lose the 2016 Carabao Cup final to Manchester City via penalty shootout. Bogdan, 36, spent time on loan at Wigan and Hibernian before officially leaving Anfield in 2019.
