Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has described Luis Diaz’s setback in his comeback from a knee injury as “a proper slap in the face.”
The Colombia international has not played for Liverpool since suffering an injury in a 3-2 Premier League loss to Arsenal at the Emirates on October 9.
Diaz has missed Liverpool’s last ten competitive matches across all competitions, despite travelling to Dubai with the rest of the club for a winter training camp.
When Diaz returned to training with the squad in the Middle East, Liverpool got a major boost, but he soon suffered a setback that scuttled his recovery.
Diaz was unable to play in Sunday’s 3-1 Dubai Super Cup defeat to Lyon, and there are worries that he might be out for up to three months if surgery is required.
In an interview with LFCTV following his team’s loss to Lyon, Klopp provided a bleak update on Diaz’s condition, albeit he did not clarify whether the 25-year-old will need surgery.

“He is not in the best possible place [mentally], that is clear. It was a big disappointment for all of us and him as well. It was a nothing situation in training, honestly,” Klopp said.
“And he felt something, he didn’t feel it a lot the next day but we wanted to be really cautious. So we said: ‘come on, let’s have a proper look’ and then the news came which was a proper smash in the face, but that’s it now.”
Diaz made an immediate impact at Liverpool after signing for £37m from Porto in January, and he already has 10 goals and eight assists in 38 outings for the Merseyside giants.
The South American scored four goals and set up three more in 12 appearances this season before suffering an injury.
