Jurgen Klopp Questions VAR Decision In Manchester City Loss

As Liverpool’s run as Carabao Cup holders came to an end, Jurgen Klopp has questioned the decision not to utilize VAR in the competition.

Following the World Cup break, the Reds’ resumed their campaign with a tense fourth-round match at Manchester City, where they were defeated 3-2.

VAR is not utilized in the Carabao Cup until the semifinal round as per 2019–20 season rules.

And while Klopp accepts the technology cannot be used in the early rounds, the Reds boss believes it was wrong that it remained dormant at the Etihad, with referee David Coote and his officials having a number of decisions hotly-disputed during the game.

“If we have VAR, the refs are used to VAR and all of a sudden you tell them no.

“It looked like in a couple of situations they were waiting for or thinking VAR was still there but there was nothing,” he said.

“There were a couple of offside decisions where everybody in the stadium was convinced it was offside, I don’t know if it was in the end or not, and we couldn’t watch it back.

“It makes sense if you play a competition and everywhere has VAR then why shouldn’t you? I understand in earlier rounds when it’s maybe not possible at all levels.

“But it’s City against Liverpool and I think all the technical things are here, so why shouldn’t we use it?”
